1950s “New Look” Mermaid SS14

March 26, 2014

With flared midi length circle skirts flouncing their way back into springtime fashions of SS14, I for one could not be more happy. Readily accessible 1950s style circle skirts and dresses are everywhere fellow vintage lovers and I will be snapping up as many as possible as quickly as possible! Those short skirts and maxis were starting to drive me nutty…

While I love the retro rockabilly side to the 1950s, I have opted for the more classically vintage side of the late 1940s / early 1950s here. (Writing this last paragraph just made me realise how many different ideas I was trying to string together there… Hopefully, I did so successfully!)

This airy theme takes its inspiration from the full skirts of the midi dress trend, which for me conjures the image of a mermaid’s full fins. Combined with the light pastels of early spring, I present to you a 1950s “New Look” mermaid theme for Spring / Summer 2014.

Pastel Green Audrey Hepburn Style Vintage 1950s Rockabilly Swing Dress

The moment I saw this gorgeous pastel green dress, I thought it was the perfect number for spring to summer transitioning. (It also comes in all colours of the pastel hued rainbow, ladies!)

The colour conjures up images of swirling seafoam waters crashing against a Grecian island and got me thinking… Is that a siren I see?

Shell and Sparkle Teardrop Earrings

Calling forth the treasure trove of sparkling gems in underwater colours, these teardrop earrings are a further nod to the swirling seas.

Detailed and opulent, they simultaneously compliment the regal elegance of Christian Dior’s “New Look”.

Pink Fine Knit Cardigan

Cute as the buttons adorning it, this light pink cardi will see you through spring and summer without issues.

I stupidly decided to use my pink cardi as a beach towel on a rocky beach in Croatia last year… Needless to say it wasn’t really the same afterwards. Why, oh, why did my brain think that was a good idea at the time?

Purple Pointed Slingback Court Shoes

Can you guess the rationale behind these lilac beauties or was I too subtle? Oh, okay, maybe I was a tad too subtle…

Minus the purple shell bra, add a pair of lilac slingback courts and you have a pointed nod to our favourite Little Miss Mermaid.

Shell Bag

A classy nod to our fairytale friends with fins, this shell bag is too adorable for words.

With a distinctly classy edge, this shell bag is kitch, classic and cute all in one. Great stand-out investment piece!

Oooh…it’s so pretty!! I would wear the whole look. I really love this kinds of dresses as the way they cinch in at the waist then flow out, is so lovely. Taking the style to a pastel look is gorgeous!! Hope you are well doll, have a great day x

Thanks Kizzy! Glad you like it :) Absolutely agree – I love the 50s silhouette. It’s flattering on anyone.

Unfortunately I actually bought that dress and the green turned out to be more of a pastel grass green as opposed to that lovely seafoam green. Needless to say, I returned it! The other dress I got was lovely though. x
